Navigating the GPSR: What You Need to Know!
We heard your concerns — what exactly does the General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR) involve, and how does it differ from the previous General Product Safety Directive (GPSD)? Understanding these changes is crucial. Why? Because staying compliant is non-negotiable.
But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.
Keep reading for a clear breakdown of the GPSR and what it means for you!
GPSR: what does it entail?
Starting December 13th, 2024, products sold to consumers in EU countries must follow the new GPSR rules.
What’s New?
While the core safety rules remain the same, the GPSR introduces new requirements:
Clearer Labels: Enhanced labeling standards for better consumer information.
Online Safety: Stricter rules for products sold online to ensure they are safe.
Tech Gadgets: New regulations for the safety of connected devices and other tech products
Important note: Most of the brands we work with aren’t required to meet the new labeling standards.
Just keep following the existing Textile Labeling Regulation as you already do.
Safety rules in the EU market
The GPSR sets safety rules for consumer products in the EU market, and it applies to all businesses, big or small.
So, what does this mean for you?
The GPSR kicks in when there are no specific safety requirements in other EU legislation for your product.
It also applies when your product has risks that aren’t covered by existing safety rules.
The GPSR requires businesses to have an internal process for product safety.
Important note: The GPSR doesn't fully apply to clothing, as brands must already comply with specific EU regulations like the Textile Labeling Regulation.
Manufacturer, importer, and distributor obligations
The GPSR outlines specific responsibilities for everyone involved in the supply chain.
Moving further away from the product's origin, the level of responsibility lessens as you move further down the supply chain.
So, who is responsible for what? We’re here to clarify those roles for you!
MANUFACTURER
Ensure the product meets safety standards.
Do a risk assessment.
Give accurate product info.
Inform consumers and authorities about dangers.
IMPORTER
Make sure the product is safe.
Keep technical documents.
Add your contact info to the product.
Work with authorities on safety issues.
DISTRIBUTOR
Check that the manufacturer and importer meet their safety obligations.
Cooperate with authorities on dangerous products.
But how do we determine who the manufacturer is?
It’s pretty simple, actually.
Brands can often be considered manufacturers.
So, when online platforms request manufacturer information from you, it is essentially your own details.
How can we help you?
To make things easier, we’ve developed a GPSR Compliance Package to keep you on track.
This package includes:
A detailed procedure guide.
A risk assessment.
