The unknown Scope 3: Embracing uncertainty while taking control
Supply chains can feel like puzzles. You can never fully predict or control every aspect, but you can try. That includes Scope 3 in carbon accounting. The Scope that many companies avoid for all costs, because it’s quite extensive.
But that doesn’t have to be you.
Here are key insights to navigate the unknown Scope 3:
What is the unknown Scope 3?
Scope 3 is the most difficult Scope in carbon accounting - and probably also the most important one.
It's specifically the one covering all not owned indirect emissions, such as actions in the value chain.
And value chains are complex.
You never quite know what’s lurking in the lower tiers.
The deeper you go, the more uncertain the data and processes become.
But here’s the thing: you don’t need to control everything from the beginning.
What you can do is focus your energy where it matters—on the areas that make the biggest impact.
Where’s that, you ask?

Tips and tricks to start you out
When navigating the unknown Scope 3, the 80/20 rule is your best friend.
Spend your energy on the top 20% of your supply chain where you can have the most impact.
For example: Focus on your Tier 1 or “A” suppliers.
Get to know them well, and you’ll build a solid foundation to improve practices across the entire chain.
Next, ditch the middlemen (as best you can anyway)!
Work directly with factories instead of agents.
Why?
Fewer middlemen = fewer headaches.
Fewer chances of miscommunication and delays.
Help your suppliers help themselves.
Encourage them to segment their own supply chains and teach them how to prioritize transparency and manage processes better.
And as you go deeper—down to Tier 3 or Tier 4—the data might get fuzzier.
That’s totally fine for now!
Focus on what you can control and don’t stress too much about what’s out of reach.
