Deep Diving into Chemicals
...We realize how that subject line sounds, and just to be clear: We don't mean literally! However, let's present the next deep dive in the series, which deals the important topic with Chemicals.
Keep reading for an introduction to the topic and to see the price and what’s included when buying the Chemical Deep Dive.
Chemical management
We cannot escape the fact that chemicals are (also) closely linked to the apparel and lifestyle industry.
And let’s not forget that not all chemicals are inherently bad.
However, some of them are, and it’s important that their use is managed and regulated, otherwise they can harm the environment and human health.
The management of chemicals used must be done according to the EU regulatory framework, REACH, and/or the (stricter) voluntary industry organization, AFIRM.
While REACH covers all industries and sectors within the EU, AFIRM specializes in the apparel and footwear industry, but worldwide.
Risks of hazardous chemicals
A significant reason why it’s necessary to manage the use of chemicals is the risks they may pose.
The risks are also important to consider when doing your due diligence to your supply chain.
Here are some examples of chemical risks you should know;
Hazardous chemicals used during manufacturing and disposed of incorrectly can lead to air, water and soil pollution
Pollution harms the ecosystem, disrupts biodiversity and degrades natural resources
Chemical residue can affect the quality of the soil and it will impact agricultural productivity
Long-term exposure to hazardous chemicals in water, food, soil and air can lead to various health issues
Working with chemicals requires stringent health and safety measures to prevent harm/illness to those that handle it
How to be compliant
So, to at least work towards avoiding any of the above-mentioned risks and to become compliant, here are some tips:
A good starting point is to have a chemicals policy and a testing strategy in place - both need to be integrated into your processes with your suppliers.
Then you may start to have chemical tests performed to ensure your products adhere to regulations.
