Deep diving into EPR

Dealing with EPR can be demanding and complex. However, it's super important to be on top if you want to be compliant. And we all want to be compliant.

That's why we’ve created a Sustaina Deep Dive dealing with EPR to help you along the way.

Keep reading for an introduction to the topic and to see the price and what’s included when buying the EPR Deep Dive.

EPR briefly explained

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is an EU regulation that comes from the Waste Framework Directive.

EPR schemes are set in place across the EU to ensure companies cover the costs for their products' waste once they’re no longer in use.

EPR is divided into three kinds of responsibilities: legal, economic, and practical responsibilities.

All with the main goal of reducing waste – whether it’s textile waste or packaging waste.

What is the Waste Framework Directive?

The short answer: It’s EU law.

The goal? Pushing recycling and recovery targets above 50% and roll out the “polluter pays principle” to keep everyone accountable.

This sets the stage for EPR, putting companies in charge of their products from start to finish.

The idea with this framework is that it lays down some basic waste management principles:

  • Prevent waste

  • Prepare it for re-use

  • Recycle what's left

  • Recover energy from what you can’t recycle

  • Dispose of what’s truly unusable

Why is EPR important

In the apparel and lifestyle sector, waste management is key.

But that’s where EPR comes in, right?

EPR holds companies accountable by making them pick up the tab for their waste disposal.

The idea is to motivate companies to produce less waste and create more circular products that they won’t have to pay to dispose of again.

And remember: By July 1, 2025, the EPR rules will apply.
