ESG Elephant Explained: Certifications
Welcome back to ESG Elephant Explained, the series where we take one bite of our ESG Elephant at a time. This time, we’re serving up a new part of the "G" (governance) — sustainability certifications.
There are quite a few options out there, and some of you probably have a couple of your own.
And that's great!
Certifications are like a seal of approval when it comes to a specific area.
It could be a certification for the organic or recycled content you’re using, the (lack of) chemicals in your products, or a more comprehensive certification like the Nordic Swan Ecolabel.
No matter what, they show that you’re not just winging it.
And they also work as documentation for your claims.
So long as you keep them updated, of course.
A certification isn't like the many products you find in a grocery store with a "best before, but also good after" expiration date.
Once it expires, it's invalid.
Maybe this is a good time to go check when you need a new audit to keep your certification (after you're done reading this newsletter, obviously).
