Want to be B Corp certified? Here is the help you need!

Ever feel like sustainability certifications are just about slapping a fancy logo on a brand or product? ♻

Well, that is not the case for B Corp. B-Corp sets high requirements to your entire organization’s social and environmental impact.

We’re lucky to have Kamma (in more ways than one, actually), who is a B Corp Impact Manager, on our team, and we asked her to take us through everything we need to know on how to become B Corp certified. 💡

What is a B Corp certification?

B Corp isn’t just a fancy badge for one product—it’s a deep dive into your entire business.

From operations to structure to work processes, it will all be put under the microscope.

Yes, the social, environmental, transparency, and responsibility (phew) standards are high.

And yes, it takes teamwork. 🤝🏼

But think of it as a chance to go through your company with a fine-tooth comb.

You’ll document what you’re already doing, spot areas to improve, and maybe even get inspired along the way.

Sounds like a lot? Sure.

Worth it? Definitely. 💚

The B Corp Certification Process

The process depends on your company’s size, but there are some overall key elements

1️⃣ Fill out the B Impact Assessment

The B Impact Assessment is publicly available and free.

Answer questions across five categories:

  1. Governance

  2. Workers

  3. Community

  4. Environment

  5. Customers

Each answer earns you points, and you need at least 80 points to qualify.

2️⃣ Review & Documentation

Once you’ve completed the assessment, your eligibility for B Corp Certification will be reviewed.

B Lab Global will check your company structure and identify any potential red flags (e.g., controversial industries). 🟥

And most importantly for you, they’ll verify your answers.

And you know what that means—you need solid documentation to back up everything you’ve claimed. ✅

3️⃣ Final Approval

If everything goes smoothly, you’ll be able to sign the B Corp Agreement

And maybe you remember that we mentioned their transparency requirements?

Or maybe you skipped that part (we get it, sometimes you’ve got to cut to the chase).

But because of their transparency requirements, you have to publish your public profile (with your score and impact report) in the B Corp Directory.

4️⃣ Join the B Corp Community!

Once certified, you become part of a global network of businesses committed to high social and environmental standards. 🌱

Who doesn’t like being part of a great network with others who share the same values?

5️⃣ Stay Certified

The show must go on! 🎭

And to make sure that it does, you have to go through recertification every three years to keep your B Corp status.

There’s not one set timeline for the whole process.

But if you’re a small- or medium-sized company, expect a wait time of 6-8 months – and longer if you’re larger.

When it comes to recertification, it’s an ongoing process. But remember to submit your updated B Impact Assessment 6 months before your recertification date. 📅
